Dancer Portraits

Two of my favorite things about portrait photography is shooting on location and incorporating off camera flash when the need arises.  Many times when you are out on location the natural light may not be available so you need to create some of your own to balance the shot. Back earlier this year I got to work with Bri and Garrett.  They both come from a dancing background so I knew I was in for a treat.  I highlighted some of their moves in an earlier post that really shows their talent.

As we walked around downtown Phoenix each location we shot at had a little bit of sunlight but not enough to really fill out the scene.  Of course that meant I got to break out the speedlights and have some fun.  Lucky me.

Now don’t get me wrong when it comes to natural light.  I love to shoot with it when I can as no strobe in the world can match the results.  However when shooting in challenging environments like downtown Phoenix you may not always get that natural light where you want it.  Speedlights offer a compact lightweight means to supplement for Mother Nature when she’s not around.
