I Feel the Need…the Need for Speed

So this past weekend we had a little fun at the Chandler airport.  We took our 4 year old out onto the tarmac for a little Top Gun duty.

For those who are old enough to remember there was an 80s movie titled “Top Gun”.  It centered on the Navy fighter pilot program at Miramar and starred Tom Cruise.  It was loaded with a high octane soundtrack and plenty of aerial footage showcasing the F14 Tomcat.  Pretty much every guy that saw the flick was ready to step into the “Danger Zone” and earn their call sign.  Maverick wannabes were abound.

We had a blast shooting on location with our son.  He was in heaven watching all the planes come and go.  The only downsides to the shoot were we only had about 30 minutes to shoot before this area was locked up  and we were shooting in less than ideal light at 5pm.  So to make up for that I had to use a little off camera flash for some fill (God bless Radio Poppers).  Had we been able to shoot around 6:30pm the light would have been fantastic.  Nonetheless it was a great time spent with family.

I couldn’t end this without a few of my favorite quotes from the movie (credit http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092099/quotes):

Maverick: I feel the need…
MaverickGoose: …the need for speed!

Carole: Hey, Goose, you big stud!
Goose: That’s me, honey.
Carole: Take me to bed or lose me forever.
Goose: Show me the way home, honey.

Maverick: Tower, this is Ghost Rider requesting a flyby.
Air Boss Johnson: Negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full.

Viper: Good morning, gentlemen, the temperature is 110 degrees.
Wolfman: Holy shit, it’s Viper!
Goose: Viper’s up here, great… oh shit…
Maverick: Great, he’s probably saying, “Holy shit, it’s Maverick and Goose.”
Goose: Yeah, I’m sure he’s saying that

Goose: The defense department regrets to inform you that your sons are dead because they were stupid.

Jester: That was some of the best flying I’ve seen to date – right up to the part where you got killed.

Until next time…

  1. Top Gun was a great movie and while all you men loved the flight sequences my favorite was when Tom cruise sings “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” to Kelly McGillis in the bar.
These are fantastic shots Chris and you’re son is adorable.

  2. What truly incredible work. Love your compositions and lighting here, Chris, very natural looking and well done. Your son looks the part there, my friend! This is one of my favorite series you’ve posted.
