A kayaker playing in the Animas River.

Play Time

A little different layout for today’s post.  Thought I would share several images of some experienced kayakers playing in the Animas River just outside of Durango Colorado.  I managed to catch these “guys” out on the water ripping it up.  It was amazing how fast they could turn their kayaks in the raging water.   You”ll notice one of the gals only has a single canoe type paddle.  Turns out she was practicing for an upcoming Olympic sport called canoeing (crazy name huh).  They use kayak type boats but with a single canoe type paddle.

The other thing I found amazing was they never tired the whole time I was there.  I shot for over an hour and they were still going strong.  Even with a water temperature around 42 degrees.  They are freaking awesome.

As always each pic can be made bigger by clicking on it.

Enjoy.

This has to be hard with a single ended paddle.

  1. The amount of concentration these people have is crazy. I’ve only paddled on calm lakes, and that can be rough if the lake if full of trees and such, I couldn’t imagine navigating a raging river. Good stuff.

  2. Wow Chris, you captured the power of the water and the power of the kayakers! Those extreme sports are difficult to photograph, but you nailed that freeze frame excitement.
