If A Tree Falls…

A fallen tree lying in the forest

What’s the saying “if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?”  Well I can testify that if you are around you will hear it.

This past weekend we took our first camping trip of the summer.  Our destination was Sedona Arizona or to be exact Oak Creek Canyon which is just north of the red rocks of Sedona.  Our campground had a nice location near the creek and plenty of trees as you can see in the above image.

Shortly after going to bed Friday night I was awaken to a loud cracking sound.  After fully waking up I realized I had just heard a tree fall in the forest.  That was a first for me and a little unnerving.  Trees aren’t supposed to topple in perfect weather while you are sleeping under them.   The next morning I confirmed with friends of ours that they too had heard the tree fall.  I never did find the one that fell, but did stumble across the one in the image above.  Now had we not been there would it have made a sound?

Until next time…

  1. Having lived on 10 acres of forested land, a tree falling doesn’t get me so much. It is still not a fun sound to hear when you are in a tent…with tiny poles being the only protection you have. Even if you were not there, there is some animal that is and they would hear the tree fall 😉 Glad you all were safe, btw.

  2. That looks like a big tree. I have very happy memories of Sedona – beautiful area and some awesome landscape. Scary, hearing trees fall in the middle of the night.
